What is the World Human Powered Speed Challenge (WHPSC)?

Every year in Battle Mountain - Nevada (USA) teams from all over the world gather on a highway in the desert in a quest to break the World Human Powered Speed Record, the absolute fastest speed that can be achieved in a human powered vehicle.

Riders take place in a fully faired recumbent bicycle and need to cope with altitude, heat and wind and stay upright on a two lane highway. After a run-up of a few minutes the fastest time is measured in a 200 meter speed trap.

The current world record is 144.17 km/h (89.59mph), with the dutch record set at 133.78km/h (83.13mph)
